ABOUT US

Asha’s History

Asha for Education is a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of basic education in India. Asha, which means “hope” in many Indian dialects, was founded at the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. Our organization has since grown to over fifty chapters scattered throughout the United States, Europe, East Asia and India, with each chapter seeking to raise funds and support various education-related projects in India.

Asha has partnered with more than 800+ NGOs from across twenty-four states in India and has disbursed upwards of $50,000,000 since its inception. Asha Berkeley, our subsidary chapter of Asha, has helped to disburse over $120,000 in just the past two years, and we hope to keep increasing that amount with the support of our community.

Asha Berkeley’s Story

Asha Berkeley was founded in Fall 1991, by volunteers who understood the importance of education and the need to provide such opportunities to the underprivileged. Today, the chapter draws members from all across the community. The members of Asha Berkeley are a tight-knit group of dedicated individuals working towards a common goal.

Our aim is to generate awareness amongst the local community in order to collectively support and provide financial assistance to grassroots educational movements in India. Every year, the group brings our community together with fun-filled and colorful events and, in doing so, serves fundraising efforts to support several education projects. Asha Berkeley not only provides financial assistance to the projects, but our members also maintain a close contact and personal involvement with the organizations and projects in India year-round.

To maximize our chapter’s outreach, the group selects diverse, education-related projects from various parts of India including rural education, education of girls and young women, vocational training, non-formalized education, support for disabled children, and teacher training programs. Asha Berkeley also works closely with other Asha chapters to ensure quality support is provided to educational efforts in India.
